Speaker:
Bernardino Fantini

Bernardino Fantini, professor of history of medicine and health at the University of Geneva, has prefaced the book by Giovanni Berlinguer titled "Storia della salute. Da privilegio a diritto” (History of Health – From Privilege to Right) and published by Giunti Editore. The book stems from a collation of short writings in which Giovanni Berlinguer, committed to bioethics and health policy in Italy and around the world, collected remarks and ideas, recording facts and references from his extensive studies and readings. A mosaic of information and thoughts that allows us to investigate an issue that affects everyone: the links between medicine and society, between advances in science and ethical limits. The topics covered emphasize the development of modern disciplines – medicine above all - and is closely related to social, economic and collective consciousness.
The meeting is the first of various events that will be organized thanks to the collaboration between the long-lived scientific section of Giunti Editore, and Museo Galileo, which represents, after its recent renovation, the ideal place where both specialized audience and the general public can find stimuli, suggestions and information on the most exciting aspects of modern science.

Homo sapiens: The Great History of Human Diversity

11 November 2011- 12 February 2012
Rome, Palazzo delle Esposizioni
Curated by Luigi Luca Cavalli Sforza and Telmo Pievani

Two hundred thousand years ago Homo sapiens began the journey from a
small valley in what is today's Ethiopia that led him to colonize the
entire planet and to live with other human species, forming the great
variety of peoples and cultures that we know. For the first time, an
international group of scientists from different disciplines and
coordinated by Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, has reconstructed the roots
and routes of human settlement. Geneticists, linguists, anthropologists
and paleo-anthropologists have combined the results of their research
into a wonderful fresco of the history of human evolution. The result is
Homo sapiens. La grande storia della diversità umana (Homo
sapiens: The Great History of Human Diversity), an international
interactive and multimedia exhibition made up of six sections telling
the stories of the adventures and extraordinary travels, largely
unknown, which generated the mosaic of human diversity.

Special promotion for Museo Galileo's visitors
For the whole duration of the exhibition "Homo Sapiens", Museo Galileo's visitors will be entitled to reduced entrance fee to the exhibitions running at Palazzo delle Esposizioni, by presenting their entrance ticket to Museo Galileo.
A reduced fee will also be applied to the purchase of the combination ticket for Palazzo delle Esposizioni and Scuderie del Quirinale.

Speakers:

Marco Bresadola, Paolo Mazzarello and Nicholas J. Wade

The book, by Marco Piccolino and Stanley Finger, is
published by Oxford University Press. It
examines a phenomenon with a long history: how did humans describe and
interpret the shock produced by three kinds of fishes which exist in various
parts of the world. Electric catfishes are
found in Africa, an “eel” in South America,
and the torpedo rays swim in many seas. The discovery of the electrical nature
of these fishes (by the Englishman John Walsh in the second half of 18th
century) was the starting point of two fundamental advances in science: on the
physiological side, the demonstration (by Luigi Galvani) that nerve conduction
and muscle excitation are electrical phenomena and on the physical side, the
invention of the electric battery by Alessandro Volta.

Marco Piccolino, who will participate in the launching, is Professor of General Physiology and Lecturer in Science History at the University of Ferrara.

Stanley Finger is Professor of Psychology, Neuroscience, and Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis.

These documents, which are housed in the museum’s library, bear witness to the crucial contribution of Italian scientific community to the Unification of Italy.

The important jury of the ICOM Prize - Museums of the Year 2010 - presided over by Alessandra Mottola Molfino, museologist and President of Italia Nostra - awarded Museo Galileo with the first prize in the category of "Best Management", for the following reasons:

"Museo Galileo - Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, open since 1930, was totally renewed in 2010, thus transforming and originally displaying its historical collections. Thanks to the high quality scientific personnel, the experienced managerial staff, the historic statutory autonomy (non-profit organization since 1927) and the collaboration of several important institutions, the Museum represents a model as to organization and sustainable management with a good relationship between public and private resources. To be appreciated are also the relevant educational activities and the high-tech services offered to the public."

The prize is attributed every other year to those museums and persons responsible for museums with outstanding scientific activity according to the guidelines set by the deontological codex, the ICOM's definition of a Museum, the Guidelines for Museum Professionals and the national and regional museum standards.

The 2011 European Museum Academy Prize to Museo Galileo

On April 9th 2011, at the DASA Working World Exhibition (Deutsche Arbeitsschutzausstellung) in Dortmund, the international panel of judges awarded Museo Galileo with the 2011 European Museum Academy Award, a prestigious prize instituted for the first time by the European Museum Academy.

It is reserved for an European science museum either newly founded or recently renovated that has achieved outstanding results with respect to the quality of presentation and display, as well as to its communication strategies aimed at reaching a vast audience.

Here is the official evaluation of the international panel of judges:

Museo Galileo has a unique collection of famous historical scientific objects shown in a very elegant, aesthetic display, which emphasises the quality of the objects and underlines the attentively balanced integration between traditional display techniques and multimedia specifically addressed to individual users.

The 2011 European Museum Academy Prize is the third award won by Museo Galileo since its re-opening in June 2010. In November 2010 it was awarded the ICOM prize in the category of "Best Management", while in December 2010 Museo Galileo won First Prize in the Great Exhibitions Competition of the British Society of the History of Science.

The book, edited by Riccardo Pratesi and published by Sillabe, draws the reader's attention to the orginal text of the lectures given by the great scientist between 1587 and 1588, where he aimed at scientifically explaining the shape and sizes of Dante's Inferno.

Riccardo Pratesi has collaborated with Museo Galileo on educational activities since 1998. With the help of new tools for analysis and a rich apparatus of drawings, Pratesi's book traces back the steps of Galileo as well as his illustrious colleagues and proposes a peculiar trip to the bottom of Dante's Inferno.

Opening of the Museo Galileo

The Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza (Institute and Museum of
the History of Science) has undergone a renovation involving a complete
redesign of its exhibition areas and displays. Today, it reopens under
the new
name of Museo Galileo, the Galileo Museum.
The event coincides with the
400th anniversary of Sidereus Nuncius—“the
Starry Messenger”—the work published in March 1610 in which
Galileo
announced the sensational observations made with his telescope. The
reopening
also marks a fitting conclusion to the celebrations of the International
Astronomy Year (2009), a U.N./UNESCO initiative specifically intended to
commemorate the celestial discoveries of the scientist from Pisa (1609).

The Museum’s subtitle will preserve its earlier
name of “Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza” (Institute and
Museum for
the History of Science). But the new designation “Museo Galileo”
emphasizes the
central role of the Galilean heritage in the Florentine institution’s
activities and cultural profile. The Museum is not only a showcase for
an
invaluable legacy of instruments and experimental apparatuses. It
operates as
an institute engaged in research and documentation, offering scholars
from
around the world the resources of its specialized library, also
available
online.

The new
layout of the Museo Galileo offers on display more than 1,000 instruments and devices of major scientific
importance and beauty. The central figure is Galileo, with the history
of Florence and Tuscany
as the background theme. Under the rule of the Medici and Lorraine, the
city and the region were a
center of excellence for scientific knowledge as well as a thriving
cradle for
the arts. The events and discoveries that took place there had a deep
impact on
the history of modern science.

The Museo Galileo features a series of
structural and functional innovations. The restoration of the interior
of the
Palazzo Castellani (which dates from the twelfth century) has emphasized its
monumental dimension and architectural
distinction. The elegant, state-of-the-art display cases highlight the
esthetic
quality of the objects on view, while ensuring their perfect
conservation.
Portable interactive video-guides—used for the first time in a
museum—make the
most complex instruments fully understandable even to non-specialist
visitors.
The devices offer access to hypertext pages, 3D animations, and
biographies.
Visitors can use the video-guides to select an itinerary through the
museum
tailored to their specific interests.
