Vincenzo Galilei: the Renaissance Dialogue between Music and Science

The first-ever international conference dedicated to Vincenzo Galilei (1520 c. - 1591), co-organized by I Tatti and Museo Galileo and curated by Ferdinando Abbri (University of Siena) and Natacha Fabbri (Museo Galileo), marks 500 years since his birth.
Vincenzo Galilei was a highly respected theoretician and practitioner of music. His life and writings indeed left a significant legacy to the worlds of music, science, and beyond. This conference brings together scholars from different disciplines – including musicology, history of science, history of philosophy, art history, and philosophy of music – with the aim of offering a multidisciplinary reading of Vincenzo Galilei’s work.
Presentations will examine the relevance of Vincenzo’s writings not only among musicians, but also in philosophical and mathematical debates over the definition of a new tuning system and the rebirth of ancient music. How he influenced the rethinking of traditional aesthetic and philosophical categories, and how he influenced his son Galileo’s research, will also be explored.
