Measuring the World

Florence, Kunsthistorisches Institut, March 4, 2022

The workshop was co-organized by Kunsthistorisches Institut-Max Planck Institut and Museo Galileo on the occasion of the exhibition From Hell to the Empyrean: Dante’s World between Science and Poetry (Florence, Palazzo Pitti, December 14, 2021 – May 29, 2022) with the aim of exploring Dante’s knowledge on the nature of space and time. Historians, literary scholars, and scientists investigated Dante’s meditation on the poetic potential of physics, the necessity of grounding artistic speculation in scientific awareness, and the ways in which measuring—both mathematical and metrical—is itself a form of world building.
