The Mill of Thought: From the Art of Memory to Neuroscience

The Mill of Thought illustrates the gradual transition from a philosophical analysis of brain functions to a strict anatomical physiological approach, and concludes with the exciting developments of current research on the nervous system. The exhibition is divided into three parts. “The Art of Memory” introduces visitors to complex memory techniques and philosophical concepts which ran through Western culture from Ancient Greece until the Renaissance. “The Discovery of the Brain” tells the evolution of brain anatomy knowledge from the Middle Ages to the early decades of the 19th century. Finally, “Birth and Frontiers of Neuroscience” presents current studies on the brain and its functions. The variety of themes are illustrated through artworks, wax anatomical models, and books as well as striking photographs and movies.
In 1990 the travelling show under the title The Enchanted Loom was designed as an educational contribution to the Decade of the Brain 1990-1999.
