Galileo and the Measurement of Time

The new interactive area of the Museo Galileo opens on March 28th, 2012

Come to Museo Galileo from March 28th onwards and Discover our New Interactive Area!

The new interactive area consists of three rooms devoted to the exploration of some Galilean instruments, with special attention to the development of mechanical devices historically used to measure time.

The first room compares ancient cosmological systems with the new celestial world discovered by Galileo. The laws of motion –from planetary motion to the fall of bodies– are illustrated as well. The second room shows the relationship between the search for longitude and the measurement of time, with special attention to how mechanical clocks operate. Ancient mechanical clocks and a replica of the striking Planetary Clock made by Lorenzo della Volpaia in 1510 are displayed in the third room. The whole interactive area offers visitors the chance to interact with working models and multimedia accessible on touch screens.

The interactive area has been created thanks to the generous grant and the collaboration of Officine Panerai. Additional contributions by the Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Università e della Ricerca and by Toscana Energia are gratefully acknowledged.
