Leopoldo de’ Medici, Prince of Collectors

Florence, Pitti Palace, Treasury of the Grand Dukes
7 November 2017 – 28 January 2018

The exhibition—organized by the Uffizi Galleries to celebrate the 4th centenary of Leopoldo de’ Medici’s birth (1617)—introduces his encyclopedic figure of man of learning and collector to a wider public. The items put together by the Prince bear witness to the variety of his interests, including statues, paintings, drawings, engravings, medals, and precious objects of various kinds, as well as books, scientific instruments and natural specimens. Most of Leopoldo’s collection is housed in the Uffizi Galleries, while the scientific instruments are conserved in the Museo Galileo of Florence. The Museo Galileo played an active role in the exhibition both by curating the part devoted to scientific collections and by lending some of the instruments that were owned by the Prince.
