How can cultural heritage be made more accessible through digital technologies while balancing knowledge sharing, asset protection, and the economic sustainability of institutions? The half-day conference on The Digitisation of Cultural Heritage, which will be held on Monday, 2 November 2026, from 10:30 to 13:00 at Museo Galileo, is dedicated to these questions.

The meeting is part of the project SIDEREUS - For an integrated digitisation and the development of virtual realities at the service of shared cultural heritage, promoted by the Department of Law at the University of Siena under the scientific direction of Annalisa Gualdani, with support from the Tuscany Region within the framework of the PR FSE+ 2021-2027. The two-year project, launched in May 2025, involves the Museo Galileo, Secursat, and the Fraternita dei Laici of Arezzo, exploring the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence and virtual reality alongside the legal issues connected to the digitisation of cultural heritage.

The conference will provide an opportunity to present the research findings of PhD researchers Costantino Luchetti, Alessandra Mattoscio, and Sonia Tognazzi—ranging from the reproduction and reuse of cultural heritage images to the relationship between accessibility and the economic sustainability of museums, up to the use of digital data in the prevention and investigation of offences against cultural property.

Introduced and concluded by Professor Annalisa Gualdani, the event will feature presentations by Federico Caporale on the use of cultural heritage images by private entities, Roberto Ferrari on the cost-effectiveness of cultural institutions, and Giorgio Van Straten on the “second life” of cultural property through photographic reproductions. Antonio Tarasco, Director General of Archives and Interim Director of the Royal Palace of Caserta, will address the topic “The Digital Footprint of Cultural Heritage: Profitable Management and Administrative Responsibility”. Daniele Parbuono and Sara Alimenti will present the experience of the CeDiPa Research Centre, illustrating the perspectives and critical issues surrounding the digital transformation of heritage.

This dialogue between academic research and the practical experience of cultural institutions will help outline criteria and tools for digital heritage management capable of promoting knowledge, protection, and public enjoyment.
