“Galileo Legacy”: Where Science Turns into Play!

The video game Galileo Legacy, the Fortnite island created by Museo Galileo, was presented on October 13, 2026.

Funded by the Italian Ministry of Culture under the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan), the project brings the Museum to Fortnite, one of the most popular online video games in the world. The island created by Museo Galileo is based on an immersive experience that allows players to solve puzzles and overcome challenges by interacting with the Museum’s scientific instruments—from telescopes and astrolabes to armillary spheres and microscopes. These have been reproduced from 3D models of the digitised heritage, with gameplay mechanics consistent with their original functions.

The goal is to make the history of science accessible and engaging for younger generations, building a bridge between the digital and museum experiences while turning learning into an enjoyable activity.

The experience has also been designed for schools. A dedicated teacher’s guide offers activities to carry out in the classroom using interactive tools through team challenges, or individually at home, allowing students to bring back observations and deeper insights on the instruments encountered during the game.

The press conference presentation featured speeches by Roberto Ferrari, Executive Director of Museo Galileo; Luca Mercuri from the Ministry of Culture; Giovanni Bettarini, Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Florence; Riccardo De Angelis, Creative Director of Dot Beyond; and Pietro Polsinelli, Director of Open Lab. During the event, a live gameplay session was also screened to give the public a concrete demonstration of how to explore the island and showcase some of the dynamics developed for Galileo Legacy.
