To mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Annali dell’Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, the complete collection of the first ten volumes (1976-1985) will be available in open access throughout 2026 on the website of its current publisher, Brill.

The journal was established on the initiative of Maria Luisa Righini Bonelli, then director of the Istituto e Museo, who envisioned a periodical to document its activities, gathering ‘articles on the history of science with a primary focus on scientific instruments, archival research, news, and bibliographies relevant to the Institution,’ as stated in the minutes of the Board of Directors meeting on January 27, 1975.

In 1986, under the directorship of Paolo Galluzzi, the journal took the new name Nuncius with the subtitle Annali di Storia della Scienza, which was later changed to Journal of the Material and Visual History of Science in 2011. The milestones of this history are retraced in the editorial by Elena Canadelli, the current editor-in-chief of Nuncius: ‘Nuncius at Fifty: What’s Next?’
