In 1979 Maria Luisa Righini Bonelli, then Director of the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, was awarded the George Sarton Medal, the prestigious international award given annually by the History of Science Society to a historian of science who has distinguished him/herself through the importance and quality of his/her work at the international level. The Sarton Medal testifies to Righini Bonelli’s outstanding commitment to historical-scientific museology and her crucial role in the consolidation and development of the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza (now Museo Galileo).

On the occasion of the centenary of the Istituto di Storia della Scienza, Daniel G. Cohen, grandson of Maria Luisa Righini Bonelli, donated to our Institute the Sarton Medal, which will be shown in the exhibition 1925-2025. One Hundred Years of the History of Science in Florence, on display at the Museo Galileo from 20 June to 19 October 2025. The donation was made possible thanks to the initiative of Marco Beretta, Professor of the History of Science at the University of Bologna and a member of the Institute’s scientific committee, and the collaboration of Prof. Alberto Righini.
