Gianni Micheli
(1936-2025)

It is with deep sorrow that Museo Galileo announces the passing of Gianni Micheli, a highly considered historian of science and technology, who had a long and fruitful collaboration with our institution.
Known for his humanity and dedication, Gianni Micheli was a crucial figure in the community of science and technology historians. With over 40 years of teaching experience at the University of Milan, he offered invaluable insights into the often-complex evolution of the discipline since the 1960s.
Micheli's extensive research interests spanned Renaissance science, the Scientific Revolution, methodological challenges, and the interplay between the history of science and the history of philosophy. In recent years, he passionately delved into the ancient world, particularly exploring the classical origins of the Scientific Revolution.
Among his significant contributions are Science and Technique in Culture and Society from the Renaissance to the Present (Einaudi 1980), third volume of the Annali della Storia d’Italia, and his book Le origini del concetto di macchina (Olschki 1995).
