Giorgio Roster (Florence, 1843–1927) was a distinguished and multifaceted figure in the nineteenth-century scientific landscape. Renowned for his achievements as a physician, professor, and hygienist, his intellectual curiosity extended well beyond the medical field to encompass significant investigations in mineralogy and botany. Roster was also a pioneer in discerning the potential of photography as a tool for empirical research and objective documentation. He systematically employed it extensively in his experimental investigations, achieving remarkable innovations, particularly in the field of photomicrography. His substantial scientific and documentary legacy—including manuscripts, notes, photographs, instruments, and laboratory materials—is now preserved across several major Tuscan institutions, including the Museo Galileo, the Alinari Foundation for Photography, the University of Florence, the Military Geographical Institute of Florence, and the Foresiana Municipal Library of Portoferraio. The new version of the digital library dedicated to Giorgio Roster is an evolution of a project completed in 2012, updated to align with the latest methodologies. This initiative, born from a collaboration among the institutions that preserve his legacy, aims to virtually reconstruct the scientist’s complete documentary memory, ensuring its safeguarding, accessibility, and dissemination through digital tools designed for consultation and interdisciplinary research.
