This exhibition, the first of its kind in Italy, focuses on the role of women in astronomical research and on exploring the female images that most frequently feature in representations of the cosmos from the Renaissance to the early twentieth century.

 The event follows the exhibition “The Art of Building a Masterpiece: Trajan’s Column”, conceived by Museo Galileo and organized in collaboration with the Uffizi Galleries in 2019 (Florence, Boboli Gardens), which has been implemented with new materials and multimedia.

The exhibition is organised under the patronage of the City of Florence and the National Committee for the celebrations of the 4th centenary of the election of Pope Urban VIII, and is part of the official program of the 2023 Italian National Space Day .

Collectors always played a critical role in creating museum collections. The exhibition Italian Hours—curated by Antonio Lenner and Giorgio Strano—emphasizes this often undervalued fact by showing a choice of Italian clocks which were found, kept, and studied by Gian Carlo Del Vecchio (1918-2016). In sixty years’ unceasing work, this great collector created a specialized gathering that is in no way inferior to those of major museums in the world.

Chiara Bettazzi's installation features scientific instruments from the Museo Galileo's storage and materials from the Murate’s storage, along with inventory cards, photographic and documentary evidence. Through visual compositions, these elements - out of context from their original places of conservation - become object and suggestion for the artist's work: a multi-level dialogue of memory is thus opened between Chiara Bettazzi's artistic imagination and the spirit that animates the institutional conservation of historical and scientific objects, resemantized in a new geography of vision.
