Antonio Favaro was the founding father of modern scholarship on Galileo, an innovative student of the manuscripts of Leonardo da Vinci, a pioneer of documentary research into the long academic tradition of the University of Padova, one of the first engineers to hold a chair in Graphic Statics, a trailblazer in the teaching of the history of mathematics, and is considered one of the principal actors in the history of Italian science from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th. The digital collection dedicated to him makes available manuscripts and printed works as well as the correspondence of a man whose work is emblematic of the scientific approach to philology and of the historical positivism of his time. This significant documentary collection, which also contains sections devoted to timelines, iconography and biography, will promote a clearer reconstruction of Favaro’s life and work, but the wider view it offers of the vicissitudes and ideas of the period gives it a relevance beyond the confines of the history of science: its interdisciplinary framework allows anyone who so desires to delve deeply into the nooks and crannies of 19th century culture as it passed into the 20th.
