The vacuum exists and air has weight – these are the revolutionary ideas of which Evangelista Torricelli’s famous experiment made in Florence in 1644 provided proof. This discovery is the main subject of Horror Vacui? – a workshop exhibition aiming to recreate the experiments that proved the existence of vacuum. The unusual background to the Machina delle maraviglie dell’aria (Machine of the marvellous operations of air), where the experimental demonstrations are staged, combines the scientific spirit with a baroque atmosphere.
