Out of Catalogue: Newly Acquired and Restored Instruments

Significant instruments acquired by the Museo di Storia della Scienza in the latest years are displayed for the first time ever in this exhibition, which also features recently restored devices and apparatus usually housed in the depository. Out of Catalogue is divided into three parts: “Purchases,” “Donations” and “Restored Works.” Of great importance among “Purchases” are Girolamo della Volpaia’s nocturnal clock dating from 1567 and two 18th-century portable pharmacy kits, containing small flasks and metal boxes as well as chemicals and minerals. An equinoctial dial dating back to the 18th century and a 17th-century telescope signed by the well-known London maker, George Adams are to be pointed out among the “Donations.” “Restored Works” include various magnetic compasses and a large model ship complete with sails and planking made in the 18th century.
